CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
Roz stared at the spreadsheet on her screen. Her vision had gone fuzzy, and sheâd reached the point where she was trying to break everything into smaller pieces because the âbig pictureâ was simply too much to handle.
The good news was that Lynzee had gotten thirty-two adoption applications for Buzz. They were going to get him into the perfect home and very soon.
The good news was Beck and Ash seemed friendlier. They'd come back together from Ashâs day off late at night, and the low grade oil-and-water feeling was now gone.
Roz had been up in her room, reading a romance novel, when the headlights had swept across the wall, followed quickly by a second set. She tried not to be a mother hen, but she always knew who was at her Sanctuary and who was out. Normally, she waited up for them to get back, even though she knew they were adults and not even her own family.
She told herself not to but hadn't been able to help heading to the window and peeking through the curtains. Ash had looked fine to herâhe wasnât stumbling around or making jerky movements. Roz wouldnât have thought anything of it except that Beck was clearly watching over him. Beck seemed to have followed Ash in.
Beck had told herâmaybe a little too casuallyâthis morning that they'd met up for beers in Charlottesville. Which then made Roz wonder if Beck had been watching over Ash from even earlier in the evening. She didn't ask.
She just took a deep breath and tried to relax into her nice office chair now.
Unfortunately, the bad news was that she'd still somehow made her employee salaries too high. They weren't too high, not in reality.
She knew they were barely middling range and cut slightly lower for the fact that housing and a good portion of food was included. But according to her budget, they were way too high.
The good news was that with Buzz finding his forever home soon, she would have one less mouth to feed. Sadly, the irony was that Buzz was the smallest dog and ate the least. Aside from feeding the dogs, all the other expenses were mostly included with the day-to-day costs of running Jade River Sanctuary.
She wouldn't cut an employee because she had lost a dog. And Roz wouldn't get any more money back on the place. While she was using five kennels, they had built ten. Her high hopes and lower per-kennel cost had her planning ahead for when the training center was fully up and running. They would have larger and larger classes, more and more room for dogs to wash out. More and more history of providing well trained dogs, the Sanctuaryâs ratings would be high.
More importantly, to be sure, she would know that people who had dogs from Jade River recommended them and lived better lives for having them. But that was all still a ways off in the future and the crushing pressure of making all that happen right now with this first class was killing her.
